RENFE

How to get the best of it.

Renfe is the company which operates cargo and passenger train services in Spain. It has three different types of passenger trains called Ave, Avant and Cercanias.

CERCANIAS is the train for short distances.  It usually covers Metropolitan areas.

AVANT is the high speed train for medium distance, and AVE is also high speed but for long distance. Depending on each one serie's,  speed varies between 250 and 300 km/hour. They both use the same rails and some of their destinations may be the same. Be sure to compare the prices for each, in order to choose the best alternative for you.

Prices: check  all the available options when traveling with Renfe. Pay special attention to the Ave's Web Price link  which gives you the chance to get up to 60% discount under certain conditions.

Where to buy tickets: at Atocha Station, from your computer by using the Renfe webpage, or from your cellphone (see next).

Ticket on Mobile: if you have internet connection on your cellphone, you can buy your ticket on the Renfe website. You will receive an SMS with your ticket so you don't need to print it. This service currently applies only for Ave and Avant trains.

Luggage: check conditions here.

Traveling with animals: it is allowed unless any of the passengers do not agree. Small pets not exceeding 10 kg are accepted and sanitary documentation is required.  Ave, Avant and Cercanias have slightly different conditions. Check them here.

Traveling with bicycles: it is generally allowed in all Renfe trains. Check full conditions here.

Traveling around Spain: a good option is the Renfe Spain Pass which allows non-residents to buy Ave and Avant passes for 4, 5, 8, 10 or 12 journeys to be used within one month. Read conditions.
