The Madrid Metro

The Madrid Metro is the perfect way to avoid traffic congestion in the spanish capital city. If you have just one or two days to stay there, the sightseeing tour bus is a good option.
After that, the Metro should be your preferred mode of transport. It runs up to 1am; after that night buses run along the same route as the Metro.

There are different types of tickets so make sure you buy the proper one for your trip. You'll find automatic ticket machines in every station, all of them with an English option on the screen. The most popular options are single tickets and ten-journey tickets (cheaper than the first one and can be shared). Tickets from or to the Airport are more expensive, so make sure you select the right option when buying.

If you have used a major subway system before, the Madrid Metro will be easy for you. If not, simply ask for assistance: locals are really very friendly. It's smart to get a map of the Metro System before you go.

This is the type of sign that you'll find passing the tickets gates. There are usually two different signs for the same line, one for each platform. Check carefully which platform includes the name of your destination station, and follow the sign. Each metro line ("Linea") has a number and a color. In the example above you can see line 8, the pink one; at Mar de Cristal Station you can catch line 4, the brown one; at Nuevos Ministerios Station you can catch lines 6 and 10; and so on.

The Madrid Metro system is still safe, fast and clean. There are some peak hours a little bit hectic, but nothing to worry about.
