MERCADO DE MOTORES: VINTAGE, FOOD AND MORE

Despite its name Mercado de Motores has nothing at all to do with cars. The name comes from the building, which was the house of Madrid Metro network's power generators until the 80s. The building is gorgeous and the power works are pretty well maintained.

So what is it actually?

Prado's Mona Lisa

Until two years ago, Prado's Mona Lisa was not much of a draw. But then researchers from the famous spanish museum documented that this lady was most likely painted by someone sitting next to Leonardo da Vinci.

Calle de la Cava Baja

Madrid probably has more restaurants/bars per capita than any other city in the world. So you have plenty of places to go out. Calle de la Cava Baja (Cava Baja Street) is one of my favorite ones as it has a lot of tapas bars, one next to the other within 200 meters.

The area is also special as it has hundreds of years of history. Cava Baja and Cava Alta Street used to be part of the fifteen century's Christian Wall.

Directions from our flat in Costanilla Street:

Take Atocha Street and walk two blocks up to Anton Martin Metro Station;
take Magdalena Street and walk five blocks up to Tirso de Molina Square;
then Magdalena Street turns into Colegiata Street: walk three blocks to Cava Baja Street.

Enjoy!!

Campo del Moro

The Moorish Garden (Campo del Moro) is a secret gem of a Madrid. Placed just behind the Royal palace it offers peacefull shift away from the city crowd., and also amazing views of the Palace.

Timetables are not available on the official website, as it is still under construction. The garden is usually open to public from 10am to 6pm during winter, and from 10am to 8pm during summer season. But is a good idea to check it by calling to the Royal Palace phone number: 914 548 800.

Metro Station: Príncipe Pío.

Be aware that there is only one entrance far away from the Palace, on the Paseo de la Virgen del Puerto. Check map here

CaixaForum Madrid

CaixaForum Madrid it is a modern art gallery and museum constructed by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron. The building combines  walls from an old and abandoned power station that previously occupied the site, and a new construction of floors which are encased with oxidized cast-iron. Just opposite to it is an art installation of green plants growing on the wall of the neighboring  building.

CaixaForum includes galleries, administrative offices and a restaurant in the upper levels, as well as an auditorium below ground level. Is conceived as an urban magnet for art-lovers and all people of Madrid and from outside. The attraction is not only its cultural program, but also the building itself that seems to desobey the gravity law.
