Parks and gardens

1) Madrid Río Manzanares-

This amazingly well redesigned park, full of red and yellow roses and trees, runs along the Manzanares River and is mainly visited by locals. It took me a while to find it as it doesn't appear amongst the main attractions of the city. It's the perfect place for a walk, to run or rent a bike.

Metro: Puerta de Toledo or Principe Pío.

2) Retiro Park-

Retiro, the most popular park amongst locals, covers an area of 350 acre that includes a large artificial pond, a crystal wall palace and lots of vegetation.

Metro: Retiro.

3) Casa de Campo-

Worth a visit if you like walks in the countryside. It also has a pond where you can rent a boat. Good idea if you walk up to the Teleférico and return straight to La Rosaleda.

4) El Capricho-

El Capricho is one of the most beautiful parks in Madrid, but not very popular due to its location. Close to Barajas Airport, it opens just on weekends and public holidays.

Metro: El Capricho and Canillejas.
